How to use the Army body fat calculator

  1. Choose Metric (cm) or US units (feet and inches).
  2. Enter your height without shoes.
  3. Enter your waist measured at the navel, with the tape level, after a normal breath out.
  4. Read your ratio, whether it meets the standard, and the largest waist that would pass at your height.

How the Army standard works

Since July 2026 the Army has used a single number for body composition: the waist-to-height ratio (WHtR). It replaced the height and weight tables, the tape test and the extra body fat scans.

Waist-to-height ratio = waist at the navel ÷ height (same units, usually inches) Standard: the ratio must be less than 0.55 Largest passing waist = just under 0.55 × height

Because it's a ratio, any unit works as long as waist and height use the same one. There is one limit for everyone, with no separate figures for age or sex.

The rule comes from Army Directive 2026-13, signed July 1, 2026 and announced July 7, 2026 (Army announcement). It follows a Department of Defense memo of December 18, 2025, which set "less than 0.55" as the upper limit for all services and called for checks twice a year. Under the directive:

  • Every soldier in the Regular Army, Army National Guard and Army Reserve is measured twice per calendar year, and commanders can order a check at any time.
  • A ratio of 0.55 or higher gets a confirmation measurement the same duty day from a different team. If that confirms it, the soldier is flagged, enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program and referred for a medical evaluation.
  • The exemption for high fitness-test scores is gone. Medical exemptions for pregnant and postpartum soldiers remain.
  • The Army is running a 180-day assessment of the new standard, and no one is separated for failing it during that period.

Worked example

These are the calculator's defaults: a height of 175 cm and a waist of 84 cm.

  • Ratio: 84 ÷ 175 = 0.48, below 0.55, so it meets the standard
  • Largest passing waist: 0.55 × 175 = 96.25 cm, so the waist must stay under 96.25 cm
  • Room below the limit: 96.25 − 84 = 12.25 cm

In US units the default is 5 ft 9 in (69 in) with a 33 in waist: 33 ÷ 69 = 0.478, shown as 0.48. The waist would need to stay under 0.55 × 69 = 37.95 in.

Maximum waist by height

Height Waist must be under
5 ft 4 in (64 in) 35.20 in (89.4 cm)
5 ft 6 in (66 in) 36.30 in (92.2 cm)
5 ft 8 in (68 in) 37.40 in (95.0 cm)
5 ft 10 in (70 in) 38.50 in (97.8 cm)
6 ft 0 in (72 in) 39.60 in (100.6 cm)
6 ft 2 in (74 in) 40.70 in (103.4 cm)

What changed from the tape test

From June 2023 the Army used a one-site tape test (Army Directive 2023-11). It took a single abdominal measurement at the navel and body weight, then turned them into a body fat percentage. For men, DA Form 5500 gives the equation as body fat % = −26.97 − 0.12 × weight in pounds + 1.99 × abdomen in inches, with limits of 20% to 26% depending on age. Women's limits were higher. The waist-to-height ratio drops the body fat step altogether, so there is no longer an official Army body fat percentage to calculate. If you still want a body fat estimate for your own tracking, use the body fat calculator.

This page is a self-check only. Your official result is the one measured by your unit, and policy can change, so confirm current rules with your chain of command. A waist ratio of 0.5 or more is also linked to higher health risks for anyone, so if yours is high, a doctor can help you plan safe changes.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Army still use the tape test?

No. Under Army Directive 2026-13 the waist-to-height ratio is the only authorized body composition method. The tape test and other body fat assessments can no longer be used to challenge a WHtR result.

Is the standard different for men and women?

No. The limit is a ratio below 0.55 for every soldier, whatever their age or sex. The old tape test had separate limits by age and sex, but those no longer apply.

What happens if my ratio is 0.55 or higher?

In an official check, a different team measures you again the same day. If the second result is also 0.55 or higher, you are flagged and enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program, with a medical evaluation. No one is separated for failing during the Army's initial 180-day assessment period.

Does a high fitness test score exempt me?

Not anymore. The directive removed the exemption that let soldiers with high fitness-test scores skip body composition screening. Medical exemptions for pregnancy and the postpartum period still apply.
