How to use the gold calculator
- Choose how the weight is given: tola, grams, masha, ratti, or tola, masha and ratti together as jewellers often write it.
- Enter the weight.
- Pick the karat: 24K is pure gold, and most jewellery in Pakistan is 22K or 21K.
- Enter today's gold price per tola for 24 karat from the sarafa market. Prices change every day, so check before you buy or sell.
- Optionally add making charges for new jewellery, or the deduction (katoti) a jeweller takes when buying gold back.
How the gold price is calculated
Karat measures purity out of 24 parts. 22 karat is 22/24, or 91.67% pure gold, so its rate is 91.67% of the 24 karat rate. The sarafa association's published 22K rate per 10 grams works out to this same 22/24 share of the 24K rate.
Worked example
The defaults are 1 tola of 22 karat gold at Rs 420,000 per tola for 24 karat, with no making charges or deduction.
- Rate for 22K: Rs 420,000 × 22 ÷ 24 = Rs 385,000 per tola
- Gold value: 1 tola × Rs 385,000 = Rs 385,000
- Pure gold inside: 11.6638 g × 22 ÷ 24 = 10.692 g
If a jeweller charges 10% making on a ring of this weight, you pay Rs 385,000 + Rs 38,500 = Rs 423,500. If you later sell it back with a 5% deduction, you get Rs 365,750.
Pakistani gold weights
| Unit | In grams | In tola |
|---|---|---|
| 1 tola | 11.6638 g | 1 |
| 1 masha | 0.9720 g | 1/12 |
| 1 ratti | 0.1215 g | 1/96 |
| 10 grams | 10 g | 0.8574 |
| 1 troy ounce | 31.1035 g | 2.6667 |
So 1 tola = 12 masha = 96 ratti, and 8 ratti make 1 masha. Gold in Pakistan is quoted per tola and per 10 grams, while world prices are per troy ounce. One tola is exactly 3/8 of a troy ounce.
Rates by karat at Rs 420,000 per tola
| Karat | Purity | Per tola | Per 10 grams |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24K | 100% | Rs 420,000 | Rs 360,088 |
| 22K | 91.67% | Rs 385,000 | Rs 330,081 |
| 21K | 87.5% | Rs 367,500 | Rs 315,077 |
| 18K | 75% | Rs 315,000 | Rs 270,066 |
Frequently asked questions
How many grams are in one tola of gold?
One tola is 11.6638 grams. This is the traditional weight used across Pakistan and India, and it is the unit the sarafa associations use for their daily rates.
Why do jewellers deduct money when I sell gold?
When you sell, the jeweller tests the purity, removes stones and allows for gold that is lost when the piece is melted. The deduction (katoti) covers this and their margin, and it varies by shop and by how pure the gold turns out to be. Making charges are almost never returned.
How do I convert tola, masha and ratti to grams?
Turn everything into tola first: tola + masha ÷ 12 + ratti ÷ 96. Then multiply by 11.6638. For example, 1 tola 6 masha is 1.5 tola, or 17.4957 grams. Choose "Tola, masha and ratti" in the calculator to do this for you.
Do I pay zakat on my gold?
Gold is zakatable wealth, and most scholars in Pakistan include jewellery. Zakat is 2.5% once your total wealth stays above the nisab for a lunar year. Use the zakat calculator with the value from this page.
