How to use the zakat calculator
- Enter the cash you keep at home and the balance in your bank accounts.
- Enter the gold you own in tola or grams and pick its karat.
- Enter today's gold price per tola for 24 karat. Check the rate from your local sarafa market, because it changes every day.
- Enter any silver you own and today's silver price per tola.
- Add business stock at its selling value, money owed to you that you expect to get back, and other savings such as prize bonds.
- Enter debts and bills you must pay now, such as a loan instalment that is due or unpaid rent.
- Choose the silver or gold nisab.
How zakat is calculated
One tola is 11.6638 grams. The nisab is the minimum wealth on which zakat becomes due. For silver it is 52.5 tola (about 612.36 g), and for gold it is 7.5 tola (about 87.48 g). Zakat is due when your wealth has stayed at or above the nisab for one full lunar year. Gold of lower karat is valued in proportion to its purity, so 22 karat counts as 22/24 of the 24 karat price.
Worked example
The defaults are Rs 250,000 in cash and bank, 2 tola of 22 karat gold at Rs 420,000 per tola, no silver, Rs 50,000 of debts due now, and the silver nisab at Rs 5,500 per tola.
- Gold: 2 × Rs 420,000 × 22 ÷ 24 = Rs 770,000
- Total assets: Rs 250,000 + Rs 770,000 = Rs 1,020,000
- Net wealth: Rs 1,020,000 − Rs 50,000 = Rs 970,000
- Silver nisab: 52.5 × Rs 5,500 = Rs 288,750, so zakat is due
- Zakat: 2.5% × Rs 970,000 = Rs 24,250
With the gold nisab (7.5 × Rs 420,000 = Rs 3,150,000), the same Rs 970,000 is below the nisab and the calculator shows Rs 0.
Silver nisab or gold nisab?
| Silver nisab | Gold nisab | |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | 52.5 tola (612.36 g) | 7.5 tola (87.48 g) |
| Value at the default prices | Rs 288,750 | Rs 3,150,000 |
| Who uses it | Many scholars in Pakistan advise it when you own cash or mixed assets | Often used when your only zakatable wealth is gold |
Because silver is far cheaper, the silver nisab is much lower and more people owe zakat under it, so more reaches people in need.
For compulsory deduction from savings accounts on the first of Ramadan, the government fixes its own nisab each year. For 1447 AH (Ramadan 2026) it was Rs 503,529. Current accounts are not deducted.
What counts and what does not
Count cash, bank balances, gold and silver (jewellery included, by most Hanafi scholars), goods bought for resale, money owed to you that you expect back, and savings such as prize bonds. Do not count your home, car, furniture, clothes, or the tools of your work. Scholars differ on details such as jewellery worn every day, shares, provident fund balances and long-term loans, so ask a scholar you trust about your own situation.
Frequently asked questions
What is the nisab for zakat in tola?
The nisab is 52.5 tola of silver or 7.5 tola of gold. Multiply by today's price per tola to get the amount in rupees. At Rs 5,500 per tola of silver, the silver nisab is Rs 288,750.
Do I pay zakat on gold jewellery I wear?
Most Hanafi scholars, whom most people in Pakistan follow, say yes: gold and silver jewellery is zakatable whether or not it is worn. Other schools exempt jewellery for normal personal use. If you are unsure, ask a scholar.
Should I value gold at the buying or selling price?
Many scholars say to use the price you could sell it for today, because zakat is on what the gold is worth to you now. Jewellers usually pay less than the shop price when they buy back, so a lower selling rate gives a smaller figure. Use the gold calculator to work out the resale value.
Can I deduct my home loan or car loan?
Deduct only the part that is due now, such as this month's instalment or a bill you must pay. Most scholars do not let you deduct the whole remaining balance of a long-term loan, because you are not paying it all now.
Does the bank cut zakat from my account?
Banks deduct 2.5% from savings and similar accounts on the first of Ramadan when the balance is at or above that year's government nisab. You can stop this by giving your bank a zakat declaration and paying zakat yourself.
