How to use the Islamic inheritance calculator

  1. Choose the language: English, اردو or العربية. The form, the results and the reasons all switch.
  2. Enter the total value of what the deceased left: land, house, cash, gold, savings, shares and vehicles.
  3. Enter the funeral costs, the debts still unpaid (unpaid mahr counts as a debt) and any bequest (wasiyyat) to people who are not heirs.
  4. Say whether the deceased was a man or a woman, then enter the spouse, children and parents who were alive at the time of death.
  5. Add brothers, sisters, grandparents and other relatives if there are any. Fields for distant relatives appear only when they could inherit.

How Islamic inheritance is calculated

The estate is settled in a fixed order, then the heirs receive their shares:

Net estate = estate − funeral costs − debts − bequest (at most 1/3 of what is left) 1. Fixed shares (fara'id) from Quran 4:11, 4:12 and 4:176: 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 2/3, 1/3, 1/6 2. What is left → the nearest male relative through the father ('asaba) (sons and daughters, brothers and sisters: a male receives twice a female) 3. Fixed shares above 1 → every share is reduced in proportion ('awl) 4. Something left and no 'asaba → returned to the sharers except the spouse (radd)

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Give the fixed shares to those entitled to them, and what remains goes to the nearest male relative" (Sahih al-Bukhari 6732). Closer relatives block more distant ones: a son blocks brothers and sisters, and the father blocks the grandfather. The calculator follows the Hanafi school, which most Sunni Muslims in Pakistan follow. In this school the paternal grandfather also blocks brothers and sisters, just like the father.

Worked example

A man leaves Rs 10,000,000. His funeral cost Rs 50,000, he owed Rs 200,000, and he made no bequest. His wife, his father, his mother, 2 sons and 1 daughter are alive.

  • Net estate: 10,000,000 − 50,000 − 200,000 = Rs 9,750,000
  • Wife: 1/8, because there are children (Quran 4:12) = Rs 1,218,750
  • Father: 1/6, because there is a son (Quran 4:11) = Rs 1,625,000
  • Mother: 1/6, because there are children (Quran 4:11) = Rs 1,625,000
  • Left for the children: 1 − 1/8 − 1/6 − 1/6 = 13/24 = Rs 5,281,250
  • The children share it 2 : 2 : 1, so 5 parts of Rs 1,056,250
  • Each son: 2 parts = Rs 2,112,500, the daughter: 1 part = Rs 1,056,250

Over a base of 120 equal parts, the wife receives 15, the father 20, the mother 20, each son 26 and the daughter 13.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a son receive twice a daughter's share?

The Quran says, "for the male, the share of two females" (Quran 4:11). Scholars explain that in Islamic law the man carries the financial duties: he pays mahr and must support his wife, children and parents, while a woman's wealth stays her own. The same 2 : 1 rule applies to full brothers and sisters and to paternal half brothers and sisters.

Can someone leave more than one third in a will?

No. When Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas asked to give away most of his wealth, the Prophet (peace be upon him) allowed one third and said, "a third, and a third is a lot" (Sahih al-Bukhari 2742). A bequest also cannot go to an heir unless the other heirs agree. The calculator limits the bequest to one third of what is left after debts.

What are 'awl and radd?

'Awl happens when the fixed shares add up to more than the whole estate, for example a husband (1/2) and two full sisters (2/3). Every share is reduced in the same proportion, so the husband gets 3/7 and the sisters 4/7. Radd is the opposite: something is left and there is no residuary heir, so the extra goes back to the sharers in proportion, but not to the husband or wife.

Does the calculator follow Shia rules or Pakistani court law?

It follows Sunni Hanafi fiqh. Shia (Jafari) inheritance rules differ in several ways, so they are not covered. In Pakistan, section 4 of the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance 1961 can also give the children of a son or daughter who died first the share their parent would have received. Courts apply it, but classical fiqh does not, so ask a lawyer as well as a mufti if this applies to you.

Do grandchildren inherit if their parent has already died?

Under the Hanafi rules in this calculator, a son's children inherit only when there is no son, and a son's daughters can also be blocked by two daughters. A daughter's children are distant relatives (dhawil arham) and inherit only when there are no sharers or residuary heirs. Pakistani statutory law treats orphaned grandchildren differently, as the previous answer explains.
