Split PDF

Cut one PDF into smaller files by page ranges, single pages or equal parts, without uploading it anywhere.

How to split a PDF

  1. Add your PDF. Drop it on the box, paste it with Ctrl+V, or press Select a PDF file. A small preview of every page appears.
  2. Choose how to split it.
    • By page ranges: type ranges such as 1-3, 4-6, 7-. Each range becomes its own PDF.
    • Every page: each page becomes a separate one-page PDF.
    • Every few pages: cut the file into parts of the same size, for example 2 pages each.
  3. Check the preview. A colored label on each page shows which new file it goes into. Pages that are left out are faded.
  4. Press Split PDF and download. When there are several new files, you get them all in one .zip file, and each one is also listed so you can download it on its own.

How to write page ranges

You type You get
1-3 Pages 1, 2 and 3 in one file
5 Page 5 on its own
8- Page 8 to the last page
1-3, 4-6 Two files: pages 1 to 3, and pages 4 to 6
1, 3, 5 Three one-page files

Separate ranges with commas. Ranges may overlap, so 1-4, 3-6 is fine if two files should share pages 3 and 4. If you type a page that doesn't exist, the tool tells you how many pages the PDF has, and nothing is created until the ranges are right.

Keep only some pages

Want a single PDF with just the pages you need? Type the ranges and turn on Put all ranges into one PDF instead. For example, 1, 3-4 with that box ticked gives one file with pages 1, 3 and 4. The pages come out in the order you type them, so 5, 1-4 moves page 5 to the front.

File names

The new files are named after the original. A file called report.pdf becomes report-pages-1-3.pdf, report-page-5.pdf and so on, and the .zip is called report-split.zip. In longer documents, page numbers get leading zeros, like report-page-07.pdf, so the files sort in the right order in any folder.

What is kept, and why it is private

Each page is copied as it is. It keeps its size, rotation, text and images, and text stays selectable and searchable. Bookmarks and fillable form fields are not carried into the new files.

The split happens inside your browser. Your own device reads the PDF and builds the new files, and the PDF is never uploaded. That matters for documents such as tax forms, contracts or medical records, and it also means there is no upload wait. Each PDF can be up to 200 MB.

Frequently asked questions

Can I split a password-protected PDF?

Not directly. Open it in a PDF reader, enter the password, save a copy without a password, and split that copy.

Does splitting lower the quality?

No. Pages are copied as they are, so text stays sharp and searchable, and images are not compressed again.

Why do the new files add up to more than the original?

Pages often share fonts and images. Each new file needs its own copy of the fonts and images its pages use, so ten one-page files can take more space in total than the single original.

How do I open the .zip file?

On Windows or a Mac, double-click it. On an iPhone, tap it in the Files app. On Android, open it in your file manager and choose Extract.

Can I split several PDFs at once?

This tool works on one PDF at a time. To join files together instead, use Merge PDF, and to delete a few pages from a file, use Remove pages.

This tool works in your browser: your files are processed on your device and are never uploaded. Check the result before you share it or delete the original.
