PDF to Excel

Turn the tables in a PDF into Excel rows and columns, with numbers you can add up, without uploading the file anywhere.

How to convert PDF to Excel

  1. Add your PDF. Drop it on the box, paste it with Ctrl+V, or press Select a PDF file.
  2. Check the preview. Under your file, the tool shows the first page with a table, laid out as it will look in Excel. Use the arrows to see other pages.
  3. Choose the sheets. Keep A sheet for each page, or pick All tables on one sheet. The second choice suits a statement that runs over several pages: a table that continues on the next page is joined into one, without its header repeated.
  4. Choose the file type and convert. Excel (.xlsx) is the best choice. CSV is there for programs that need it.
  5. Download the file and check one total against the PDF.

How the tool finds the tables

A PDF doesn't store tables, only pieces of text and where each one sits on the page. The tool lines the text up into rows, then looks for gaps that run down through every row. Each gap becomes a column border. Lines drawn in the PDF, like the borders of a grid, are used as borders too.

When a description wraps onto a second line, the tool joins it back into one cell if the PDF draws lines between the rows, or if the wrapped line sits clearly closer to its row than the rows sit to each other. Text outside the tables, like a bank's name, is copied as plain rows so nothing is lost. You can turn that off.

Numbers you can add up

Amounts become real numbers, not text, so SUM works right away. The tool reads thousands separators (1,234.56), minus signs, negatives in parentheses like (1,350.00), percentages and currency signs such as $, € and £. Each number keeps its look through a matching number format. The European style 1.234,56 works too: the tool works out which style your PDF uses, or you can set it.

Some things only look like numbers. Account numbers and codes with leading zeros, such as 004512, stay text so the zeros are kept. Dates are copied as text, exactly as written, so 10/02 can never swap its day and month.

What it can't do

  • Scanned pages. A scan is a picture with no text in it, so there is nothing to put in the cells. Run OCR PDF first, then convert the new file. The preview tells you when a page has no text.
  • Merged headings. A heading that spans several columns lands in one cell.
  • Unusual layouts. Tables with no clear gap between columns, or text set in several columns like a newspaper, may need some tidying. Charts are not converted.

Private and quick

Everything happens in your browser. The PDF is never uploaded, which matters for bank statements and payroll reports. In our test, a 20-page statement became a spreadsheet in under a second on a computer.

Frequently asked questions

Is this PDF to Excel converter free?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no watermark, and files up to 200 MB work.

Will the file open in Google Sheets or Numbers?

Yes. The .xlsx file opens in Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice and Numbers. In Google Sheets, use File > Import and choose the file.

Why do some numbers sit on the left of the cell?

They are text. Codes with leading zeros, dates and anything the tool can't read as a number stay text. If a whole column should be numbers, check the number style setting and convert again.

Can I convert only some pages?

Yes. Type them in Pages to convert, like 2-4, 7. Leave the box empty to convert every page.

This tool works in your browser: your files are processed on your device and are never uploaded. Check the result before you share it or delete the original.
