How to add page numbers to a PDF
- Add your PDF. Drop it on the box, paste it with Ctrl+V, or press Select a PDF file.
- Pick a position. Click one of the nine dots: a corner, the middle of an edge, or the center of the page. Bottom center and bottom right are the most common.
- Choose a format. You can print just the number (
3),Page 3,Page 3 of 12, or3/12. - Check the preview. It shows your own page with the number on it. Use the arrows to look at other pages.
- Press Add page numbers and download the new file. It keeps the original name with
-numberedat the end.
Skip a cover page or start from another number
Start on page sets the first page that gets a number. Set it to 2 and the cover stays clean, while page 2 shows "1". First number sets the number printed on that page, which helps when the PDF is one chapter of a longer document and should start at 41, for example.
To leave out pages in the middle, such as full-page photos or blank pages, choose Only some pages and type the pages that should show a number, like 2-10, 12-20. The pages you leave out still count. Page 12 therefore shows 12, not 11, so the printed numbers always match each page's place in the file.
In the "of N" formats, N is the number printed on the last numbered page. With a cover page skipped in a 12-page file, the last page shows "Page 11 of 11".
Style and placement
Choose the font (Helvetica, Helvetica Bold, Times or Courier), the size in points, the color, and how far the number sits from the edge of the page. Small is about 6 mm, Medium about 13 mm and Large about 19 mm. Medium suits most office documents. Pick Large if the file will be printed and bound.
Pages are numbered the way you see them. A wide page, or a page that is turned sideways in the file, still gets its number upright at the bottom of the page as it appears on screen.
What stays the same, and why it is private
The numbers are added as real text, so they stay sharp at any zoom and can be searched and copied. Everything already on the page is left exactly as it was: text stays selectable, images keep their quality, and page sizes don't change.
The work happens inside your browser. Your device reads the PDF, adds the numbers and saves the new file, and nothing is uploaded to us. That keeps private papers private and avoids an upload wait. Each file can be up to 200 MB.
Frequently asked questions
Can I number only part of a PDF?
Yes. Choose Only some pages and type the pages, for example 3-20. Use Start on page if you only want to skip pages at the beginning.
Can I number several PDFs as one document?
Join them first with Merge PDF, then number the merged file. The numbers then run across all of the files in order.
Will page numbers cover my text?
They can if the page has content close to the edge. Check the preview, and if the number touches something, choose a larger distance from the edge, a smaller font size, or another position.
Can I use Roman numerals or other languages?
Not at the moment. The tool prints standard numbers with the English words "Page" and "of". Choose the plain 1 or 1/N format if you need a format without words.
